Cormorant Island is home to the ‘Namgis Indigenous People, and is part of the Kwakwaka’wakw Territory.
The quaint fishing village of Alert Bay is the hub of this small Northern Gulf island, and features oceanfront galleries, shops, eateries, and the Alert Bay Public Library & Museum. A short stroll from the village centre is the boardwalk that connects the village to the renowned U’mista Cultural Centre, open year-round, which showcases repatriated Kwakwaka’wakw ceremonial potlatch masks and regalia, as well as historical multimedia displays, and an impressive gift shop. On Saturdays in July and August, the T’sasala Cultural Group holds traditional dance performances at the Big House, known for the world’s tallest totem pole.
You can also explore the island’s wildlife at Alert Bay Ecological Park, with its boardwalk and wooded trails, and keep an eye out for Harlequin ducks, bald eagles and owls. The ferry ride over is also a good opportunity for orca and humpback whale spotting. Stay at The Cabins At Alert Bay to experience a unique viewpoint from a lovely outdoor pavilion for whale viewing and star gazing.
