Galiano Island: W̱SÁNEĆ and Penelakut Traditional Territory

February 2, 2021

Located in the traditional territories of the Penelakut Nation, Galiano Island is known as the “Gateway to the Gulf Islands”. It’s the first ferry stop from Vancouver, BC and less than an hour from city life – so close, yet a world away.  When you are here, the peace envelopes you, the sounds of nature surround you. A walk on the shore may take you to one of dozens of shore accesses, And along those shores, you will discover wave-molded sandstone rock formations, some big enough in which you can find your own refuge from this busy world.

From the shores of Active Pass, you will see all marine traffic between Victoria and Vancouver and, above, an abundance of sea birds, eagles, and ravens. And, of course, along our oceanfront, otters and sea lions, and orcas so close you feel you can reach out and touch.

We love our island, we love to share it… our parks, our luxury inns or one-of-a-kind bed and breakfasts, everyone can find the perfect space to retreat from the world.

And our resident islanders love the small businesses that make up our community. Galiano is home to more than a dozen unique and special restaurants, several grocers and sweet little shops and fantastic artisans and adventure companies. They are an essential component of our island’s wonderful atmosphere… and with your support we will continue to keep our island vibe alive.
