Membership Frequently Asked Questions

Who can join RIEP?

BC Residents can join RIEP, either as a:

Stakeholder Member:
A British Columbia resident, business or organization who is located in or operates in the stakeholder regions*. Stakeholder Members are voting members of RIEP.

Associate Member:
A British Columbia resident, business or organization who is located outside of the stakeholder regions*. Associate Members are non-voting members of RIEP.

*Stakeholder Regions:

  • 18+ rural islands including: Bowen, Broughton Archipelago, Cormorant, Cortes, Denman, Gabriola, Galiano, Gambier, Hornby, Lasqueti, Malcolm, Mayne, Pender, Quadra, Salt Spring, Saturna, Texada, Thetis
  • Rural and remote coastal communities – from Port Hardy to Tofino, Sayward to Sechelt, and Ladysmith to Sooke
  • Indigenous communities with traditional and reserve lands located in these coastal areas
Who can qualify as an individual member?

A person engaged directly, or indirectly, in economic capacity and development that impacts the stakeholder region of the Partnership.

Some examples of individual members include Indigenous and non-Indigenous artisans who have artists studios on the rural islands but are not registered as businesses; an individual community member who volunteers for a local community organization but who is not representing that organization in RIEP; a resident of an adjacent rural island community who frequently travels to a rural island for business.

Note, the same person cannot join as more than one type of member.

Who can qualify as a business member?
  • Apply as a business if you are representing your business and you conduct business operations on one of the Stakeholder Regions
  • Apply as an Associate member business if you are located outside of the stakeholder regions
Who can qualify as an organization member?

Organizations include corporations, non-profit societies, partnerships, associations, governments (including Crown Corporations and First Nations) engaged directly or indirectly in community economic capacity building in the region. Some examples include Chambers of Commerce, Tribal Councils, local and provincial government departments, and community services organizations.

The voting power of such memberships will be assigned to a dedicated individual representing the Organization.

Note, the same person cannot join as more than one type of member.

How long does a membership last?

RIEP memberships are for 12 months from the date of sign-up and are renewable online. You will receive an email notification at your supplied email address when your membership is up for renewal.

Are RIEP memberships subject to tax?
Yes. All membership fees are subject to 5% GST. For your records – RIEP’s GST# is 74948 0737 RT0001.
